Conventional Top-Entry Agitators:  In biotechnology, agitators ensure uniform distribution of nutrients and gases which are dissolved in the broth. Additionally, they keep the cultivated cells in motion and provide uniform temperature. Depending on the kind of cells to be cultivated and their oxygen demand, different agitator designs are used.

Axial Flow, Low-Shear Designs:  The impeller produces an axial primary flow resulting in reduced shear forces. This leads to a very gentle but thorough mixing. Therefore the impeller is especially recommended for the cultivation of animal cells, but is equally suitable for the homogenization of solutions (liquid/liquid, liquid/solid).

Radial Flow, High-Shear Designs:  The disk turbine produces a radial primary flow, and is used mostly where a turbulant flow is required. The disk turbine is very suitable to disperse fluids and fluid particles, achieving a larger exchange area for compounds and agents.
